“Mendacity/ Τρία Ψέματα Μία Αλήθεια”, is a 20min video essay that superimposes a joint narration read by myself and my educator parents on footage shot in an empty public high school in Athens. It is a study and critique of the glorification and instrumentalization of Greek antiquity within both white-western imperialism and the Greek nationalist imaginary, focusing on the lies and forgeries of Heinrich Schlieman, the amateur archeologist who excavated (and partly destroyed) Troy and Mycenae. Mendacity takes the ‘fake mask of Agamemnon’ as well as Schliemann himself as case studies, exploring the way Greek national identity is formed around the fabrication of symbols and perpetuated via the public education system.
